Easily Track Your Assets And Net Worth.
It's increasingly simple and inexpensive to efficiently stay on top of your finances.
2024 was the year that Mint died. The popular asset-tracking and budgeting app was shut down by owners Intuit. In its dying months and years, Mint came under a lot of criticism for its clunky interface and constantly-breaking connections with financial institutions. Its demise turned the attention of its millions of users to aggregation alternatives. In this article, I want to highlight some of these ..
The Old School Alternatives:
Even while Mint was alive and kicking, it had some competition.
You Need A Budget is the OG elaborate spending management tool that tracks budgeting items really well but is not great as an investment and asset-tracking app. Not cheap.
Tiller Money is designed for spreadsheet lovers, enables you to bring in bank account, credit card and investment connections to a Google Sheet or Excel. There’s a bit of a learning curve and the smartphone and tablet versions don’t work that well.
The New Players:
A number of platforms have recently come to market.
Monarch is a well-designed app with an easy-to-navigate dashboard and a very impressive tablet and smartphone app. Links seem to break less frequently and are easy to reconnect. Full disclosure: I chose Monarch for my personal asset-tracking. You can get a discounted rate here.
Co-Pilot has gathered a lot of fans in a short period of time. It has a very visually pleasing interface, is feature-rich and offers effective Mac and iPhone apps. Slightly more expensive than Monarch.
Origin is the latest newcomer to the space, offering an integrated investment platform and wider financial planning services on top of asset-tracking and budgeting features. That extended suite of services which takes it beyond the world of just aggregation actually makes me a bit more nervous and hesitant about the app. Not yet convinced.
Do It Yourself:
Financial blogger and Ritholtz Wealth COO Nick Maggiulli recently published an article that included a link to an outstanding free Google Sheets-based net worth-tracker that he created. The article contains all the instructions you need to set it up and run it yourself at no cost. There’s a bit of a creation time commitment, but once in place, it runs itself well with minimal required maintenance. You can read the article here.
